At the Cartagena International Film Festival 2020, we had the great surprise and fortune of being awarded with the India Catalina award for best photographer for a TV serie: Bolivar. Produced for Caracol TV and Netflix.

With all the things that has happened around the Globe, this event is just like a dream that was stuck hidden behind this quarantine madness. Although, to update the blog and looking for write down a thanks note to the jury and audience for their benevolence and care about our work on this project is just fair to raise our forehead to say that Bolivar was an spectacular project, challenging for everyone but with an aftertaste of a job made with effort, love and conviction.

Record on Sony F55 cameras, almost all scenes at real locations! We looked for that living backgrounds with the real patina needed to transport everyone to that time and space where some men and women were fighting for freedom of our people.
We counted with a talented cast that let us all to be immersed in that reality with the way they just breathed and talk around the set.

To create the mood and atmosphere of a time when there were not electricity was a challenge precisely in order of avoid "seeing our lighting". But with a mixed technique of new technologies and special lighting set ups we just got the right ambience needed by cast and cameras to get involved. And working again with the great director Andrés Beltrán completed the right environment to create the magic together.

It was really satisfying when the cast entered a set and exclaimed: wow, it seems like 1800´s!

Now the only expected is a happy audience that enjoy the show and remember how hard was the fight of this heroes and heroines that got freedom for our nations.

Hopely this Covid-19 circumstances just finished soon and we can get all of us on a set safely. By now I invite you to watch the serie, and enjoy it the same way we enjoyed shooting it!

Dramatic but up close and personal insights from our guests showing themselves as human and vulnerable beings but with the resilience and empowering that comes from helping hands and good vibes even on the more upwards moments.

Was shot on F55 camera, using a mapping credits design on set and a intense portrait light design to show skins, eyes and faces as natural and beauty as we can. Texture against the backdrop, and a controlled low key photography creates the right mood for this testimonial invitation to be part of the march for raise funds for the needy people in Colombia.

Desafio Superhumanos, 2019 / Super humans Challenge Promo shooting

Posted: by Juan Carlos Cajiao Velasco Freelance Director and Director Of Photography in Labels: , , , , , , ,

The challenge begins...

With a bunch of crazy filmmakers we got on this new project with no doubt but very excited! Shoot at La Guajira desert, Colombia is always a challenge by itself. Far away from the city, shooting day light only with a really tight schedule for long 10 days...wow!

Director and DOP Juan Carlos Cajiao loves this kind of documentary reality projects, even though a lot of mise en scene is needed in order to create the astonishing images that will grab audience attention.

Waiting with patience the exact sun position and trying to do not die fried by the intense hot temperature, even the wind helped us a lot to do so.

Just drop off the cars, grab the camera and create the scene in a rush. You have some ideas in your head, but in the middle of nowhere you just must improvise and frame your scene as soon as you can.
Using the real competitors of the reality show, formed as teams from the 10 differences regions of Colombia, we made up sequences in which they show their skills, powerful strenght, abilities and temper!

Relax, photo shoot! Here our team on set!

Here our set!

Proud about this project! Desafio is a must see show in our country and being part of the team that created the promos and teaser prior the release is great!

Like shooting in Mars...soon on air...
